Shiraike Jigoku (White Pond Hell) 白池地獄
Serene milky-white hot spring pond in a Japanese garden, a national Place of Scenic Beauty, with a small tropical fish aquarium heated by the spring.
Common ticket (elementary/junior high): ¥1,200
About
Shiraike Jigoku's water erupts clear and turns pale bluish-white as it cools and its pressure drops, filling a calm pond framed by pines and stone lanterns in a classic Japanese garden. It's the most tranquil of the Kannawa hells and, together with Umi, Chinoike and Tatsumaki, part of the national Place of Scenic Beauty designation. A small aquarium uses the spring's heat to keep Amazonian fish such as piranha and arapaima, and the site also has a little folk museum corner. Good for a quiet breather mid-tour.
