About

Beppu's onsen boom created a market for bamboo baskets and utensils for long-stay bathers, and the city's craftsmen developed a finesse that earned Beppu Bamboo Ware status as a nationally designated traditional craft. This centre explains the material, the weaving patterns and the history, then shows astonishing work by living national treasure Shono Shounsai and other masters, from delicate flower baskets to sculptural vessels. Workshops (booking needed) let you make a bamboo bell (about 40 minutes) or a 'Shikaiha' flower basket (about 60 minutes). The shop sells pieces by local artisans, and there is a cafe overlooking a bamboo grove.
