Toyoken レストラン東洋軒
The 1926 Chinese restaurant that invented toriten, Oita's tempura-style fried chicken dipped in ponzu and mustard. Still the reference plate in Beppu.
Typical dinner: ¥3,000
About
Toyoken was founded in 1926 by Miyamoto Kanji, a chef who had cooked for the imperial household, and his cooking evolved into a Japanese-Chinese menu that included toriten: chicken thigh marinated, coated in a light tempura batter and fried, then dipped in vinegar-soy sauce with karashi mustard. It became the soul food of Oita, and Toyoken still serves the 'honke' (original) version, plus a yuzu-pepper variant, in a big, old-fashioned restaurant with a stone-lion entrance and round tables. The Chinese menu (sweet-and-sour pork, fried rice) is good too, and there's a branch in Tokiwa department store.
