About

Yumenoshima, "Dream Island", began as a rubbish landfill in Tokyo Bay; today it is a big green park, and at its centre stand the three hexagonal domes of the Tropical Greenhouse. Dome A is a humid jungle with a waterfall and tree ferns, Dome B recreates the vegetation of a tropical island and Dome C holds Ogasawara Islands plants and useful tropical crops such as cacao, coffee and bananas. The heating comes from the neighbouring Shin-Koto incineration plant, a neat piece of city recycling. Entry is a couple of hundred yen and on rainy days it is a warm, green, quiet refuge. Outside, the Daigo Fukuryu Maru Exhibition Hall preserves the tuna boat irradiated by the 1954 Bikini Atoll H-bomb test, sobering and free.
