Tsukudako-bashi & Tsukuda Old Harbour 佃小橋と佃堀

A small red bridge over the old fishing-boat channel of Tsukuda, with Edo-era tsukudani shops and moored boats in front and gleaming 50-storey towers behind, Tokyo's sharpest old-versus-new contrast.

About

Tsukuda was settled in the early 1600s by fishermen from Osaka's Tsukuda village, and the little inlet called Tsukudabori still shelters boats beside wooden houses and shops selling tsukudani, the sweet-salty preserved fish the island gave its name to. The vermilion Tsukudako-bashi crosses the inlet, and from it or from the water's edge you can frame red railings, boats and low wooden roofs against the glass towers of Okawabata River City 21. Every three years, during the Sumiyoshi Shrine festival, the giant festival poles buried under the canal are dug up and raised. The area is small and residential, so walk quietly and enjoy one of central Tokyo's rare surviving fishing-village corners.
