Tsukishima Back Alleys (Roji) 月島の路地
Narrow lanes branching off Nishinaka-dori where old two-storey wooden houses, potted plants and bicycles crowd together under the Harumi and Kachidoki towers.
About
Walk past the monja restaurants on Nishinaka-dori and look into the narrow side alleys (roji) between the 1st and 4th blocks of Tsukishima 3-chome. Shot from the alley mouth, the frame is a strip of weathered wood, laundry and plant pots leading to a sliver of sky, and some lanes reveal a glass tower rising behind the old roofs, a classic Tokyo old-and-new contrast. Overcast days or late afternoon give soft even light in the narrow lanes. These are people's homes: shoot from the entrance, do not walk deep into private alleys, do not photograph residents without asking, and keep quiet.
Highlights
- Prewar-style wooden row houses packed into narrow lanes
- Old houses framed against high-rise towers
- Potted gardens and laundry details
- Right next to Tsukishima Monja Street
Tips
- Stay at the alley entrances; many lanes are effectively private.
- No tripods: the lanes are barely wider than a bicycle.
- Mornings are quiet; avoid dinner hours when the monja street is busiest.
