Tsukuda Ohashi Bridge 佃大橋
The first new Sumida bridge after the war, opened in 1964 for the Tokyo Olympics on the site of the 320-year-old Tsukuda ferry.
About
Tsukuda Ohashi replaced the Tsukuda no Watashi ferry, which had run between Akashicho and Tsukudajima for over three centuries. Built for the 1964 Olympics, it was a pioneer of lifting huge prefabricated girder blocks into place with a floating crane. The bridge itself is a plain box girder, but the walk across gives wide views of the Tsukishima and Okawabata towers, Chuo Ohashi and Kachidoki, and the old Tsukuda ferry monument stands on the Akashicho bank. On the Tokyo Marathon course, runners know it as a notorious climb.
