About

Founded, according to tradition, in 841 and moved to the waterfront of Edo's Teppozu harbour, this shrine protected sailors and the rice ships that docked here. Its hidden treasure is the Teppozu Fujizuka, a mini Mount Fuji built from black lava rocks for those who could not make the pilgrimage to the real mountain; it is climbable only during the annual yama-biraki in early summer. The rest of the year you see the rock mound beside the main hall, the guardian foxes and the elegant ferro-concrete 1930s honden. Locals in Minato and Shintomi come for festivals; visitors almost never find it.
