Tokyo Toy Museum 東京おもちゃ美術館
A hands-on wooden toy museum in a converted 1930s elementary school in Yotsuya, where kids (and adults) play with thousands of toys from Japan and around the world.
Child (6 months–elementary): ¥800
About
Run by a non-profit that promotes wooden play, the Tokyo Toy Museum fills the classrooms of the former Yotsuya Daiyon Elementary School with toys you are meant to touch. The Wooden Toy Forest room is a cedar-scented indoor playground with a ball pit of wooden balls; other rooms are devoted to traditional Japanese toys such as kendama, spinning tops and karakuri mechanical dolls, board games from around the world, and a baby room for under-twos. Volunteer 'toy curators' in red aprons demonstrate games and run craft workshops. It is busy with families at weekends but genuinely charming, and the old school building, with its creaky floors and wide corridors, adds to the nostalgia.
