About

Built into the Yotsuya Fire Station and directly connected to Yotsuya-sanchome Station, the Fire Museum traces how a city of wooden houses fought fire. The fifth floor covers the Edo period, when fire was so common it was called the 'flower of Edo': dioramas of machi-bikeshi brigades tearing down houses to make firebreaks, embroidered firefighter coats and the elaborate matoi standards each brigade waved from rooftops. Lower floors show Meiji-era steam pumps, a basement full of classic fire engines including a 1920s Ahrens-Fox, and modern rescue equipment, while a retired fire helicopter is displayed on the roof and in the basement you can sit in some vehicles. Labels are mostly Japanese, but the objects speak for themselves, and children love it.
