About

On 1 September 1923, some 38,000 people who had fled the Great Kanto Earthquake to an open lot here, the former army clothing depot, died when a firestorm swept through. The memorial hall, designed by Ito Chuta and completed in 1930, combines Buddhist temple and pagoda forms in reinforced concrete and houses the remains of tens of thousands of earthquake victims. After World War II the remains of victims of the 1945 Tokyo air raids were added, and the hall was renamed the Tokyo Memorial Hall. Inside, large paintings depict the disaster. Next door, the free Reconstruction Memorial Museum displays melted objects, photos and records of the earthquake and the city's rebuilding, and the park is filled with Ito Chuta's whimsical creature carvings. Memorial services are held on 1 September and 10 March.
