About
Run by the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords, this museum moved in 2018 from Yoyogi to a sleek Fumihiko Maki building in the former Yasuda Garden in Ryogoku. The single upper-floor gallery is dimly lit with each bare blade under precise spotlights, which is how swords are meant to be appreciated: you lean in to see the hada (grain of folded steel), the wavering hamon temper line and the signatures of smiths dating back to the Heian era. Exhibitions rotate several times a year and include blades designated National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties, plus fittings like tsuba hand guards and lacquered scabbards. The ground floor has an introduction to sword making, a shop and a rooftop garden with views over the Kyu-Yasuda garden.
Highlights
- Spot-lit naked blades revealing hamon temper lines and steel grain
- National Treasure and Important Cultural Property swords in rotation
- Displays of tsuba guards and koshirae mountings
- Fumihiko Maki-designed building in the Kyu-Yasuda Garden
- Free rooftop terrace overlooking a traditional stroll garden
Tips
- Move slowly and shift your viewing angle along each case, the hamon temper line only appears when the light catches it.
- English explanations are concise; the website lists the current exhibition's smiths if you want to read up first.
- The museum closes between exhibitions, check dates before making a special trip.
- Pair with the free Kyu-Yasuda Garden right outside and the Edo-Tokyo Museum 3 minutes away.
