About

Founded in 1954, the Sumo Museum occupies a single gallery off the entrance of Ryogoku Kokugikan. Its collection includes banzuke ranking sheets going back centuries, ukiyo-e prints of Edo-period sumo stars, ornate kesho-mawashi aprons worn in ring-entering ceremonies, and photographs or portraits of every yokozuna. Displays change around six times a year on themes from Edo sumo to individual champions. It is free and takes 20 minutes, but it's the perfect warm-up for exploring Ryogoku, the sumo district of training stables and chanko-nabe restaurants. Note the access rules: normally open weekdays only, and during Tokyo tournaments (January, May, September) only ticket holders for that day can enter.
