Skytree from Kuramae-bashi 蔵前橋からのスカイツリー
The yellow arch of Kuramae Bridge, lit warm at night, with Skytree glowing upriver, a lesser-known Sumida River composition that is easy to get without crowds.
About
Kuramae-bashi, completed in 1927 as part of the reconstruction after the Great Kanto Earthquake, is painted a distinctive yellow said to recall the rice once stored in the shogunate warehouses at Kuramae. From the Sumida River Terrace on the Kuramae (west) bank just south of the bridge, you can frame the arch with Skytree rising behind it upriver. At night the bridge is lit, Skytree shines blue or purple, and the riverside promenade is quiet, ideal for long exposures with smooth water. Ryogoku Kokugikan is just across the bridge, so you can add sumo banners on tournament days.
Highlights
- Yellow 1927 arch bridge lit at night
- Skytree glowing upriver behind the arch
- Quiet Sumida River Terrace for long exposures
- Water buses and pleasure boats passing
- Five minutes from Ryogoku Kokugikan and Kuramae's craft shops
Tips
- Use 10-30 s exposures at night to smooth the river; the terrace railing is a stable support.
- A 35-50 mm puts Skytree at a pleasing size behind the arch.
- The terrace is lit and pleasant for walking north to Komagata-bashi and Azuma-bashi.
- Stay clear of cyclists on the promenade.
