Koiwa Iris Garden 小岩菖蒲園
A free iris garden on the Edogawa riverbank in Kita-Koiwa with around 50,000 irises of 100 varieties, viewed from wooden walkways; a quieter alternative to Horikiri in June.
About
Opened by Edogawa ward in 1982 on the floodplain of the Edogawa, Koiwa Shobuen packs around 50,000 Japanese irises of some 100 varieties into beds crossed by wooden plank paths, with a wisteria trellis, a small pond and a Japanese-style rest house. Because it sits right below the river embankment, you can climb up afterwards for big skies and views across to the Konodai bluff in Ichikawa. Admission is free, theres no commercial bustle, and in early to mid-June its one of the most photogenic iris displays in Tokyo.
