About
Many visitors pray at Taishakuten and leave, missing its greatest treasure. Between 1922 and 1934 a team of master carvers covered the exterior of the Taishakudo inner hall with ten huge zelkova panels depicting scenes from the Lotus Sutra, plus intricate friezes of animals and flowers, all in astonishing depth. A glass-enclosed walkway now protects them, and a separate ticket admits you along with the Suikei-en garden, a pond garden designed in 1965 that you view from a raised, roofed corridor that wraps around it. Together theyre one of Tokyos finest pieces of Showa-era craftsmanship and almost never crowded.
