Shibamata Yamamoto-tei 柴又 山本亭
A Taisho-era house mixing Japanese and Western rooms around a classic garden with a waterfall, consistently ranked among the top Japanese gardens by the US journal Sukiya Living; matcha in the tatami rooms costs a few hundred yen.
Matcha with sweet: ¥500
About
Built for the Yamamoto family, owners of a camera-parts factory, in the 1920s and remodelled through the early Showa years, Yamamoto-tei combines a nagaya-mon gate, a run of tatami rooms with long engawa verandas and a single Western-style parlour with stained glass and a fireplace. All face a karesansui-meets-pond garden with a waterfall, stone lanterns and carefully clipped pines, and it is the view from the tatami rooms, seated with matcha and a seasonal sweet, that has earned the house its place among the top-rated Japanese gardens in the US magazine The Journal of Japanese Gardening (Sukiya Living) for years. Its right beside the Tora-san Museum and is the calmest spot in Shibamata.
