About

Ryogoku is sumo country, and its station shows it. The old JR station building, an Art Deco-tinged structure from 1929, was restored and reopened in 2016 as Ryogoku Edo Noren, a food hall modelled on an Edo townscape with a full-size dohyo (sumo ring) in the middle, ringed by restaurants serving chanko-nabe, monjayaki, tempura, sushi and soba. The station's concourse displays sumo champions' portraits and handprints, and during tournament weeks you may share the platform with wrestlers in yukata. The station's little-used Platform 3, a remnant of its days as a terminus, is used for special trains such as the B.B.Base cycle train to the Boso Peninsula. Ryogoku Kokugikan, the sumo hall, and the Edo-Tokyo Museum are a few minutes' walk away.
