About

This small walled enclosure in Ryōgoku preserves a fragment of the mansion of Kira Yoshinaka, the official whose quarrel with Lord Asano of Akō led to the most famous vendetta in Japanese history. After the sword incident in Edo Castle, Kira was moved out of his residence near the castle to this site in Honjo, then on the far side of the Sumida River. On a winter night in 1702 by the old calendar, the 47 Ronin broke in, found Kira hiding in a charcoal shed and killed him. Local residents bought a small part of the site in the 1930s and gave it to the city. Inside are a shrine, a well said to be where Kira's head was washed, and a statue of Kira, who is respected as a good lord in his home province.
