About
Ekoin was founded in 1657 to pray for over 100,000 victims of the Great Fire of Meireki, and it still holds memorials for all beings, including animals. From 1833 regular sumo tournaments were held in its grounds until the first Ryogoku Kokugikan opened in 1909, and the Chikarazuka stone honours sumo elders. The grounds also hold Japan's first mizuko memorial and an animal memorial area.
