Shin-Koiwas Lumiere arcade, roofed since 1958 and later modernised, is a classic downtown shotengai that has survived the chains: discount grocers, bargain sozai deli counters, fishmongers, tea shops, drugstores and cheap izakaya pack its 420 metres. Because its fully covered its busy rain or shine, and the prices are some of the lowest in the 23 wards. Evenings bring a mix of locals and workers from the many small bars around the station, giving it a lived-in energy thats the opposite of tourist Tokyo.
