Shibuya Nonbei Yokocho 渋谷のんべい横丁
A two-lane huddle of around 40 lantern-lit micro bars beside the Yamanote tracks, a few steps from Shibuya Crossing, that has outlived every redevelopment around it.
About
'Drunkard's Alley' dates from the 1950s, when street stalls were moved off the main roads into this narrow strip by the tracks. Today it remains one of the last pieces of old Shibuya, a calm, slightly secret counterpoint to the crossing's neon. Bars seat four to eight people: sake bars, wine bars, a famous oden counter, little yakitori grills, and a few places run by the same mama-san for decades. It is much less crowded than Golden Gai and the clientele is mostly local office workers and creatives. Like any yokocho, check cover charges and respect 'regulars' signs; many shops are happy to see visitors who order properly and stay for a drink or two.
