Shibuya Scramble Crossing 渋谷スクランブル交差点
The world's most famous pedestrian crossing: when all the lights turn red for cars, up to 3,000 people surge from five directions at once under giant video screens.
About
Shibuya Scramble is not a sight you visit so much as one you join. In front of Shibuya Station's Hachiko Exit, five crosswalks converge, and every two minutes or so the traffic stops in all directions and crowds pour across diagonally, weaving without collision. It has starred in films from 'Lost in Translation' to 'Fast & Furious: Tokyo Drift', and is the backdrop to Halloween and New Year crowds (now restricted, with street drinking banned). Beyond crossing it yourself, the fun is watching from above: the Shibuya Sky rooftop looks straight down, while free windows in the Shibuya Mark City corridor and the elevated walkways of Shibuya Station give great time-lapse angles.
Highlights
- Up to 3,000 people crossing at once at peak times
- Giant QFRONT, 109 and station-front video screens
- Hachiko statue and the green Toyoko train-car at the station plaza
- Overhead views from Shibuya Sky and Mark City's glass corridor
- Neon-soaked night scenes made famous by countless films
Tips
- For a free elevated view, head to the Shibuya Mark City connecting corridor (by Taro Okamoto's 'Myth of Tomorrow' mural) inside the station.
- Friday and Saturday nights after 20:00 give the densest crowds; mornings are surprisingly sparse.
- Don't stop mid-crossing for photos, the lights are short and police manage the flow.
- Halloween night and New Year's Eve have street-drinking bans and heavy restrictions in the area.
