Shibuya Center Gai Gate 渋谷センター街 アーチ
The neon arch at the entrance to Center Gai, Shibuya's youth shopping street, glowing above the crowds a few steps from the Scramble Crossing.
About
Stand at the Scramble Crossing side of the Udagawa-cho entrance, just past the Tsutaya corner, and shoot up the street so the illuminated Center Gai arch sits at the top of the frame with the crowd, screens and shop signs funnelling away beneath it. After dark the arch and surrounding neon are at their best, and a slow shutter of around 1/8 second blurs the crowd while the sign stays sharp. It is extremely busy: shoot quickly from the pavement edge, do not stop in the middle of the flow, and be mindful about photographing people's faces.
Highlights
- Illuminated arch over a packed neon street
- Steps from the Scramble Crossing
- Busy street-life and motion-blur shots
- Gateway to Spain-zaka and Udagawacho
Tips
- After 7pm is the best mix of neon and crowds.
- Keep your bag in front of you in the crowds.
- Continue to Spain-zaka two blocks in for a quieter, more retro frame.
