About

Park Hyatt Tokyo opened in 1994 on floors 39–52 of Shinjuku Park Tower, Kenzo Tange's three-stepped granite-and-glass tower capped by glass pyramids. John Morford's interiors, a dark, bookish and very 1990s luxury, became famous worldwide through Sofia Coppola's Lost in Translation. The hotel closed in May 2024 for its biggest renovation since opening and reopened on 9 December 2025. Paris studio Jouin Manku updated the rooms and public spaces in the spirit of Morford's originals. The New York Grill & Bar, Kozue and the library were restored rather than redesigned. For non-guests, the ritual is the same: take the lift to the 41st-floor Peak Lounge, with its glass atrium and bamboo grove, for afternoon tea, then go up to the 52nd-floor New York Bar under the pyramid at dusk for cocktails, live music and a 360° view across western Tokyo to Mount Fuji. Girandole now serves food by Alain Ducasse.
