About

Since February 2024 the Tokyo Metropolitan Government has run TOKYO Night & Light, a permanent projection-mapping show on the east facade of Main Building No. 1, certified by Guinness as the largest permanent projection mapping on a building. Shows run daily except in bad weather, with several short programmes each evening; a new piece made with students of the Tokyo Metropolitan Arts High School premiered on 9 October 2026, alongside collaborations with games, anime and artists. The viewing area is Tomin Hiroba, the colonnaded semicircular plaza between the main building and the Metropolitan Assembly, designed by Kenzo Tange to echo a European piazza. Its curved arcades make a natural frame, and the plaza is wide enough for a 24 mm lens to take in the full height of the tower.
