Nihao (Kamata) 你好 本店
The Kamata restaurant credited with inventing hanetsuki gyoza, dumplings joined by a lacy, crispy 'wing', still cheap, smoky and packed with locals.
Typical meal with beer: ¥1,800
About
In 1983 Nihao's founder adapted his hometown Dalian fried dumplings for Japanese tastes, adding a starch batter that fries into a golden crisp skirt connecting the gyoza. The style spread across Japan, and Kamata became the city's gyoza town, but Nihao's original shop on the Kamata bus-street arcade is still the reference. Order a plate of hanetsuki gyoza, some water-boiled sui-gyoza and a beer, and dip in vinegar and pepper. Prices are delightfully modest; the clientele is neighbourhood regulars and gyoza pilgrims.
