Ginza Sony Park 銀座ソニーパーク

Sony's 2025 'building as park' at the Sukiyabashi crossing: a deliberately low, open, raw-concrete structure with stepped open-air floors, free exhibitions and a direct link to the subway, replacing the 1966 Sony Building.

About

For half a century the Sony Building stood at Ginza's Sukiyabashi crossing, a showroom of the latest gadgets. Sony demolished it in 2017 and, instead of building a tower, turned the plot into a temporary park, then built Ginza Sony Park, which reopened on 26 January 2025. The building is intentionally modest, about 34 m, roughly half the height of its neighbours, with five floors above ground and several below, open-sided platforms, stairs and a rooftop that feel like a vertical public space rather than a store. It hosts rotating free exhibitions, music and design events, with cafes and a dining space underground connected to Ginza Station. It is an interesting counterpoint to the luxury flagships around it, and a free place to sit down in the middle of Ginza.
