About

Maison Hermes was designed by Renzo Piano and completed in 2001 on a narrow plot in Ginza 5-chome. Its facade is made entirely of square glass blocks, around 13,000 of them, specially made in Italy, hung from a slender steel frame engineered with flexible joints to ride out earthquakes. By day the blocks soften the light into a milky glow; by night the whole tower shines like a lantern on Sony-dori. Inside, beyond the boutique floors, the eighth-floor gallery Le Forum stages free exhibitions of contemporary art under the glass-block walls, and a small cinema hosts occasional free screenings. Look up at the roof to spot the statue of a horseman juggling a scarf.
