About

Chihiro Iwasaki (1918–1974) painted children in soft, bleeding watercolours that defined Japanese picture books, and the world's first picture-book art museum opened on the site of her home in 1977. Rebuilt in 2002 by architect Hiroshi Naito, it has bright galleries, a reconstruction of her studio, a library of picture books from many countries, a children's room, a garden planted with the flowers she painted, and a cafe. Exhibitions pair Chihiro's work with other illustrators; from Oct 30, 2026 to Jan 31, 2027 the theme is Chihiro: The Joy of Travel. Visitors 18 and under enter free, making it an easy family outing.
