Shakujii Park & Sanpoji Pond 石神井公園・三宝寺池

Two very different ponds a short walk from Shakujii-koen Station: boat-filled Shakujii Pond and the wild, spring-fed Sanpoji Pond, ringed by marsh plants and ancient trees. It is Nerima's much-loved weekend park, with castle ruins and a historic temple on the hill above.

About

Shakujii Park is Inokashira Park's quieter, wilder sibling, and mostly locals use it. Shakujii Pond, the lower and larger of the two, has swan boats and rowing boats and cherry blossoms along its banks. Upstream, the Sanpoji Pond is fed by Musashino springs. It is fringed with reeds and has a nationally protected marsh-plant community, plus a boardwalk where cormorants and kingfishers fish. On the plateau between the ponds are the earthwork ruins of Shakujii Castle, the medieval stronghold of the Toshima clan. Next to them stand Sanpoji Temple and Hikawa Shrine. Weekends bring families, sketch groups and birdwatchers, and there are a couple of tea houses near the pond serving dango and beer.
