About

Suginami has the highest concentration of animation studios in Japan, and this museum opened in 2005 to tell the history of anime and how it is made. Exhibits trace the industry from early 20th-century shorts to modern digital production, with original cels and drawings, explanations of key frames and in-betweens, and a timeline of landmark works. Hands-on corners let visitors try simple animation, and an after-recording booth lets you dub voices onto a short clip. A library holds thousands of anime-related books and DVDs, and a small theatre screens shorts. Special exhibitions rotate; autumn 2026 celebrates 50 years of Shin-Ei Animation, the studio behind Doraemon and Crayon Shin-chan (to Nov 29).
