About

Aji no Manraku descends from Manraku, a Chinese restaurant the current owner's great-grandmother opened in Nihonbashi in 1912, which makes it one of the longest family ramen lineages in Tokyo. The shop now stands near the Shoheibashi crossing between Akihabara and Ochanomizu, and is run single-handedly by the fourth-generation okami. The ramen is the pre-war style: a clear seiyu broth of chicken and pork bones lifted with ginger and garlic, thin noodles and simple toppings. Regulars pair it with chuka-gayu, a soothing Chinese rice porridge, and in summer the hiyashi chuka (cold noodles) appears early. Opening is short and weekday-only, which is part of its charm: this is a neighbourhood lunch counter, not a tourist stop.
