Akihabara's best-known maid café: maids greet you as 'master' or 'princess', draw on your omurice in ketchup and lead the room in 'moe moe kyun' chants, kitschy, wholesome and very Akiba.

About

Maid cafés are one of Akihabara's defining subcultures, and @home cafe, open since 2004, is the big, professionally run name. Its main store fills several floors of the Mitsuwa Building near the station, each with slightly different décor. You pay a table charge for an hour, order from a menu of drinks, parfaits and the signature omurice, and the maids perform small rituals, mixing your drink with a magic spell, drawing faces in ketchup, posing for a paid instant photo (Polaroid-style 'cheki'). Stage performances and games happen on some floors. It's earnest rather than seedy: photography of the maids is not allowed except in paid photos, and the vibe is family-friendly. Go once with an open mind and a sense of humour; prices add up, so budget roughly ¥2,500–3,500 per person.
