About

Opened in 1923 as one of Japan's first Western-style cinemas and theatres, Shochikuza kept its arched brick facade when it was rebuilt as a 1,000-seat playhouse in 1997. Shochiku stages Kansai kabuki here in several months of the year, along with commercial plays, star concerts and Shochiku Shinkigeki comedy. It stands at the west end of the Dotonbori canal strip.
