Osaka City Central Public Hall 大阪市中央公会堂
A red-brick neo-Renaissance concert hall on Nakanoshima island, built in 1918 with a stockbrokers donation and now an Important Cultural Property, gorgeous when floodlit at night.
About
In 1911 the stockbroker Iwamoto Einosuke donated a million yen, a staggering sum, to build a public hall for the people of Osaka; he lost his fortune and took his own life before it was completed in 1918. The building, designed from a competition entry by Okada Shinichiro and finished by Tatsuno Kingo's office, has red brick, white stone banding, green copper domes and a huge arched front, and it was designated an Important Cultural Property in 2002 after a full restoration. Inside, the Special Room on the third floor has a ceiling and walls painted with Japanese mythological scenes, and the main hall still hosts concerts and lectures. A small free exhibition room in the basement tells the buildings story, and the basement restaurant serves Osaka-style omurice. At night the building is lit up and reflected in the river, the centrepiece of Nakanoshima's night views.
