About

The museum opened in 1982 to house the Ataka Collection, assembled by the Ataka trading company and donated to the city by Sumitomo group companies when the firm collapsed, and it has since grown to around 6,000 pieces. Highlights include a Southern Song oil-spot tenmoku tea bowl and a Yuan-dynasty celadon vase with iron-brown spots, both National Treasures, and one of the finest Korean Goryeo celadon and Joseon porcelain collections outside Korea. A natural-light gallery under skylights displays celadon in sunlight, and display cases are designed to let you see the foot and glaze from every angle. After a two-year renovation it reopened in April 2024 with a new entrance hall, cafe and LED lighting. It sits next to the Central Public Hall, so it is easy to pair with a Nakanoshima walk.
