Kushikatsu Daruma Shinsekai Honten 串かつだるま 新世界総本店
The original 1929 kushikatsu counter behind the angry-faced chef statue that has become a symbol of Osaka. Deep-fried skewers, a shared sauce pot and the city's most famous rule: no double-dipping.
About
Daruma started as a tiny standing counter in Shinsekai in 1929 and kept its recipe for thin, crisp batter fried in beef tallow blends. The Shinsekai honten is still a narrow counter where you sit shoulder to shoulder, order skewers by the piece (beef, lotus root, shrimp, quail egg, mochi, cheese) and dip each one once in the stainless steel sauce tray. Free raw cabbage is your palate cleanser and the approved way to scoop extra sauce. The glaring chef statue at the door is one of Osaka's most photographed faces.
