About

Tsutenkaku means "tower reaching heaven". The original 1912 tower, inspired by the Eiffel Tower and Paris, stood over Shinsekai (New World), an amusement district of the Meiji era modelled on Paris and Coney Island; it was dismantled in 1943 for wartime metal and rebuilt in 1956 by Naito Tachu, also the engineer of Tokyo Tower. Its neon, including the Hitachi advertisement on its sides and a weather forecast in coloured lights at the top, is the backdrop to Shinsekai's kushikatsu alleys. Inside, the Golden Observatory on the 5th floor holds the Billiken statue, and the Tip the Tsutenkaku outdoor deck juts out at 94.5 m. The Tower Slider, a 60 m spiralling slide from the 3rd floor to the basement, takes about 10 seconds.
