Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka 産寧坂・二寧坂
The stone-paved slopes below Kiyomizu-dera lined with wooden machiya selling pottery, pickles, sweets and souvenirs. Kyoto's most famous old shopping street.
About
Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka are preserved Edo-style lanes connecting Kiyomizu-dera with Kodaiji and Yasaka Shrine. Their wooden two-storey shops sell Kiyomizu-yaki pottery, shichimi pepper, pickles, yatsuhashi, folding fans and chopsticks, as well as tourist-friendly snacks and the famous Starbucks and Donguri Republic Ghibli shop. Legend says if you fall on Sannenzaka you will have three years' bad luck, so watch your step. It is one of Kyoto's most photographed places, especially at dawn.
