Park Hyatt Kyoto opened in October 2019 on the hillside between Kodai-ji and Kiyomizu-dera, on the grounds of Kyoyamato, a 150-year-old ryotei (traditional restaurant) that still operates within the property. The building steps down the slope in layers of timber, stone and tile so that it blends into the old streets of Ninenzaka, and the interiors by Tony Chi are calm and residential. The real draw for visitors is the bar, Kohaku, whose windows look straight over the rooftops to the five-storey Yasaka pagoda; book a table at dusk when the pagoda is lit. The Yasaka restaurant serves a grill menu with Kyoto produce, and Kyoyamato offers kaiseki in its historic rooms and garden.
