Kasagiya かさぎ屋
A tiny 1914-founded sweet shop on Ninenzaka once loved by painter Takehisa Yumeji, serving ohagi and zenzai (red-bean soup) in a dim wooden room.
Zenzai: ¥900
About
Kasagiya has hardly changed in a century: a small, dark-beamed room with wooden benches, a handful of tables and a menu built around azuki beans from Tamba. Order the three-colour ohagi (rice balls coated in red bean, soybean flour and black sesame) or a bowl of zenzai with toasted mochi. The painter-poet Takehisa Yumeji is said to have spent time here with his lover, and the shop's old-Kyoto atmosphere is a perfect break from Ninenzaka's crowds.
