About
Hanaore takes its name from the Hanaore Pass on the old Saba Kaido mackerel road from Wakasa Bay to Kyoto, and its main business is thick, generously fatty saba-zushi sold in elegant boxes. The Shimogamo shop, a short walk from Shimogamo Shrine, has a quiet eat-in room behind the counter where the Hanaore set lets you try both the classic kombu-wrapped saba-zushi and the seared aburi version side by side. It opens early, which makes it an excellent late breakfast or lunch after a morning at Tadasu-no-mori forest.
