Demachi Masugata Shotengai 出町桝形商店街

A short, old-school covered shopping arcade just west of the Kamogawa Delta, full of fishmongers, mochi shops, a mini-cinema and local diners. It's the anime 'Tamako Market' location and a slice of everyday Kyoto.

About

Demachi is where the old Saba Kaido mackerel road from the Sea of Japan reached Kyoto, and its covered arcade still has the feel of a neighbourhood market. Fishmongers, greengrocers, tofu makers and diners line the street, along with the indie cinema Demachiza and its bookshop café. The arcade was the model for the anime Tamako Market, and fans still visit. Nearby is Demachi Futaba, whose mame-mochi (bean mochi) draws queues. Combine it with the Kamogawa Delta stepping stones and Shimogamo Shrine.
