About

Ryukakuji is believed to date to the late 7th century, and roof tiles from that era found here are the oldest known in Chiba. Its treasure is a seated bronze Yakushi Nyorai whose head is a Hakuho-period work, among the oldest near-life-size Buddhas in eastern Japan, now kept in a storehouse within the grounds; the body was restored in the Edo period. The national historic site of the pagoda base, about 10.8 m square, suggests a three-storey pagoda once stood here at around 33 m tall. Volunteer guides explain the site and its dragon legends on weekends. It is a quiet, rural complement to the nearby burial mounds and Boso no Mura.
