About

Boso no Mura rebuilds a late-Edo streetscape of merchant houses, from a sake shop and confectioner to a blacksmith and dyer, plus a samurai residence and farmhouses from different parts of Chiba, all set among fields and woods. Staff in period roles demonstrate traditional crafts, and visitors can sign up for workshops such as making soba, wagashi, indigo dyeing, pottery or straw crafts (extra fees). The adjoining Boso Fudoki no Oka area holds an archaeology museum and the Ryukakuji burial mound group, including the huge Iwaya Kofun. It is one of the best introductions to rural Japanese life near Tokyo and a stop on the Narita transit tours.
