About

Omotesando winds gently downhill from JR and Keisei Narita stations to the Sohmon gate of Naritasan Shinshoji, and it has been feeding pilgrims since the Edo period. Narita is famous for unagi, so the street smells of charcoal and sweet tare: chefs split live eels at cutting boards in the shopfronts of Kawatoyo and its rivals. Between them are sellers of senbei, chestnut yokan, Narita pickles and local sake, souvenir shops, and several handsome wooden buildings, including three-storey former inns. Every July the street fills for the Narita Gion Festival, when ten ornate floats are hauled up and down the slope over three days. It is the obvious way to reach the temple and, for many transit passengers, the whole Japan trip in a single walk.
