About

Yufuin-no-Mori ('Forest of Yufuin') is one of JR Kyushu's famous D&S (design and story) trains, running about 2 hours 15 minutes from Hakata to Yufuin through the mountains of the Kyudai Line. Its forest-green and gold carriages have raised seating for panoramic views, wood-panelled interiors, a buffet car with local sweets and bento, and attendants who offer commemorative photo boards. All seats are reserved. Note that the extension to Oita and Beppu (trains 3 and 4) has been temporarily replaced by the regular 'Yufu' limited express in 2026, so plan to board or leave the Yufuin-no-Mori at Yufuin.

Reserve seats as soon as they open (one month ahead) for weekends
JR Kyushu Rail Pass covers the train, but you still need a seat reservation
In 2026 trains 3/4 to Beppu were replaced by the Yufu express: check before planning
Sit on the right side from Hakata for the best river views
