JR Yufuin has 80 station lockers in medium, large and extra-large sizes, beside the Arata Isozaki-designed station building. Next door, the YUFUINFO centre's Chikki service can deliver bags to your ryokan.

Yufuin Station, a striking black timber building by architect Arata Isozaki, is where the Yufuin no Mori and Aso Boy style tourist trains arrive. JR Kyushu lists 80 lockers here: 28 medium, 24 large and 28 extra-large, a generous mix for a small town, priced on JR Kyushu's higher Hakata/Yufuin scale (about 800 yen medium, 1,000 large and 1,200 extra-large). The day changes at midnight. If you're staying at a ryokan, the Yufuin Chikki luggage service in the Yufu City Tourist Information Center next door can carry bags to member inns the same day, letting you walk Yunotsubo Kaido to Lake Kinrin hands-free.

Tips

• The day count changes at midnight on JR Kyushu lockers
• If you're staying overnight, use Chikki delivery rather than paying two locker days
• Lockers fill when the Yufuin no Mori arrives; get there first
• Most lockers are cleared after 3 days and the contents go to the station lost-property office, so don't use them for multi-day storage
