About

Shidaka Lake lies on a plateau in the Aso-Kuju National Park area above Beppu, a cool escape from town in summer. A 2 km path loops the lake past grassy lawns and woods, swans and ducks paddle by, and rental boats (including swan pedal boats) are available. There is a popular campground, and in spring cherry trees line the shore. With Mt. Yufu and Mt. Tsurumi in view and almost no foreign tourists, it's a true local-favourite picnic spot. Pair with the Kagurame iris garden or Kijima Kogen Park on the same road.
